If you are a dog lover like myself, then the health, happiness and general well being of your dog is immensely important to you. Dog health problems and complications can turn out to be very expensive, but there are preventative measures which can be taken in order to promote dog health and dodge trips to the vet.
Dog health is highly dependent upon what we, as owners, choose to feed our pets. Chocolate, for example, have negative effects on canine hearts and nervous systems, all it takes is a few ounces to kill a small dog. On that note, dairy should also be avoided at all costs. Most dogs are naturally lactose intolerant, just a little drop of it could make your dog sick as a dog.
Neutering and spaying has so many benefits for dog health. Not only will unwanted pups be avoided and behavior improved, but spaying your female virtually eliminates any chance of uterine cancer, uterine infection and ovarian cancer. Neutering gets rid of any worry about perineal hernias and penile tumors.
Purchasing healthy dog foods which promote a balanced diet can make all the difference in dog health. Arguably, the best diet for a healthy dog consists of 50 percent vegetables and 50 percent meat. Dog foods which contain grain, wheat or other cheap fillers should be avoided when possible. Also look to see that the protein ingredient in food is high up on the list of ingredients. Protein (and lots of it!) is essential to dog health. This must be looked at carefully though, because if a meat ingredient is listed first and then followed by several fillers, there is not enough protein. The meat is being watered down by grain or wheat fillers and, therefore, not optimal for dog health.
If you are a vegetarian, you may wish your dog to be as well. Believe it or not, a well planned vegetarian diet can sustain dog health even though dogs are naturally carnivorous. Although it is possible for a dog to survive as a vegetarian, it is not recommended by most veterinarians and holistic practitioners as the best way for your dog to thrive.
If you love your dog, show him or her how much with providing a healthy diet and environment! He or she will be forever thankful for it. Oh, and do not forget to take your dog on plenty of walks, exercise is key!
